Supongo que recordaréis el artículo del 20 de marzo de Kate sobre los mercados de Barcelona. Comprar buena comida es muy importante, pero creo que también nos interesa a todos dónde poder comprar la mejor ropa, zapatos, accesorios… ¡y todas esas cosas que nos gustan tanto!

I suppose you still remember Kate’s article from 20th March on Barcelona markets. Buying good food is very important indeed, but I also think that we are all interested in where to buy the best clothes, shoes, accessories… and all those things that we all love!

Si lleváis unos días ya en Barcelona, sabréis que la escuela está situada en la zona de compras más concurrida de la ciudad, que son Paseo de Gracia y Las Ramblas. Paseo de Gracia está llena de tiendas de marcas importantes, y por ello, no demasiado asequibles, pero son perfectas para ‘darse un capricho’ muy de vez en cuando. En esta zona encontraréis por ejemplo tiendas como Diesel, Louis Vuitton o Cartier.

If you have already been in Barcelona for a couple of days, you will know that the school is located in the heart of the most popular shopping area in the city, which is Las Ramblas and Paseo de Gracia. Paseo de Gracia is full of designer shops, not very affordable, but perfect for when we feel like giving ourselves a treat! Here you will find shops like Diesel, Louis Vuitton or Cartier.

Lunes/Monday 15:00 Copa de bienvenida/Welcome drink

La copa de bienvenida es siempre la oportunidad perfecta para que los estudiantes que ya están aquí y los nuevos se conozcan. ¡Y qué mejor que hacerlo en el jardín tomando sangría y unas tapitas!

The welcome drink is always the perfect chance for the old and new students to meet each other. What better way to do it than with Tapas and Sangría in the garden.

 Martes/Tuesday 14:15 Taller: La Semana Santa en España/Culture Workshop: Easter in Spain

En este taller descubriremos con nuestra profesora Leticia cómo se celebra la Semana Santa en diferentes partes de España, Tambores en Calanda, Pasos en Sevilla….

In this workshop we will discover with our teacher Leticia what Easter celebrations are like around Spain: Drum Parades in Calanda, ‘Pasos’ in Seville…

Si no sabes muy bien qué hacer en el largo fín de semana de Semana Santa, te puedo recomendar diferentes lugares en España para visitar y ver diferentes formas de interpretar la pasión de Cristo. / If you do not know very well what to do this long Easter weekend, I can recommend you different places in Spain to visit and observe the different ways we have to interpretate the Passion of Christ.

España, país de larga tradición católica, celebra la Semana Santa de manera muy diferente a otros paises de Europa. / Spain, country of a long catholic tradition, celebrates Easter in a very diferent way to other countries in Europe.

Se celebra de una manera u otra, en casi todas las ciudades de España pero puedo destacar como más interesantes a las siguientes ciudades:/ It is celebrated in a way or in another in all the nation, however I can point out some cities where Easter is celebrated in a very interesting way:

Good afternoon all!

If you have not yet lived the ‘Camino Barcelona experience’ you might well be wondering what an average day is like as a student at our school??  Well, let me give you an idea of a student’s daily routine, the best places to grab a coffee at break time and great sites to see nearby after class!  For those of you who are already here at the school…read on…you might just learn something :) 

9am - Classes start for the group courses! Wakey wakey! Don’t worry, Rosanna our work-experience assistant is in reception to greet you with a big smile and to make the morning a bit more bearable!

9.50am - 5 minute break. Time to go to the toilet, get a drink or sign up for the activity of the day! 

10:45am - The 30 minute break! After an hour or so of classes, you should have woken up by now! But if you need a caffeine injection and some food to keep the brain cells functioning, this is the perfect time to fuel up! You can get hot and soft drinks as well as a variety of snacks from machines in the school gardens.

¡La primavera ya está aquí y con ella el buen tiempo! En esta época del año apetece más que nunca estar al aire libre y disfrutar de las calles llenas de vida de Barcelona.

Una de las mejores maneras de moverse por la ciudad es en bici. Yo por ejemplo siempre he envidiado a los que iban por el paseo de la playa en bici, disfrutando de la vista.

Hasta ahora había un buen número de empresas privadas que ofrecían bicis en alquiler, perfectas para un día relajado. Se podían alquilar por horas o días, según tu interés.

Barcelona está llena de carriles especiales para bicis, lo que ha permitido que incluso se organicen visitas turísticas en bici. Pregúntanos en la escuela, ¡tenemos más información sobre estas visitas para tí!

¿Pero es que a nadie le gusta la música y los conciertos? Sonaré muy reinvindicativa, pero deberíais sentiros privilegiados por estar en la ciudad de España donde más conciertos internacionales tenéis la oportunidad de ver. Artistas como Beyoncé, Maná, Roger Waters o Scissor Sisters son sólo unos pocos de los músicos internacionales que visitarán Barcelona este año.

So what, nobody likes music and concerts? I may sound reinvindicative, but I really think you should feel very lucky for being in the Spanish city with most international concerts you will have the chance to see. People like Beyoncé, Maná, Roger Waters or Scissor Sisters are just some of the many international artists who will visit Barcelona this year.

Barcelona es, con casi toda seguridad, la ciudad española más internacional y cosmopolita. Sin embargo, por esta misma razón, creo que a veces la música en español no se promociona tanto como me gustaría. Hay artistas españoles que visitan Barcelona cada semana, y ¡la verdad es que no veo muchos carteles en la ciudad anunciándolos!

Barcelona is, almost certainly, the most international and cosmopolitan Spanish city. However, because of this, I think music in Spanish is not promoted as much as it should be. There are many Spanish artists visiting Barcelona every week, and the truth is I don’t see many posters around telling about it!

Si os gusta la música en general, y queréis conocer un poco más de nuestra cultura a través de nuestros artistas, os recomiendo un festival de música pop española que hay este fin de semana. Se llama Can Zam, es el domingo en Santa Coloma de Gramanet, y ¡ES GRATIS! Podéis llegar a Santa Coloma en metro, línea 1 (roja), parada ‘Baró de Viver’ o ‘Santa Coloma’. Empieza a las 10 de la mañana, en el Parque de Can Zam, así que también tendréis la oportunidad de disfrutar de un día de sol al aire libre. ¡Una manera diferente de pasar un domingo fuera de la ciudad sin ir muy lejos!

If you like music in general, and you would like to know a bit more of our culture through our artists, I will recommend you a Spanish pop music festival happening this weekend in Barcelona. It is called Can Zam, and it will take place this Sunday in Santa Coloma de Gramanet, and IT’S FREE! You can reach Santa Coloma by metro in the red line (L1), stopping in ‘Baró de Viver’ or ‘Santa Coloma’. It will be starting at 10 am in the Can Zam Park, so it is also a great chance to enjoy a sunny day outdoors. Just a different way to spend a Sunday, out of the city without going too far!

Como cada semana, os vengo a contar cuál será el programa de actividades de la escuela de la semana que viene, ¡a ver qué os parece! Oye, si tenéis alguna sugerencia sobre alguna actividad especial que os gustaría realizar, siempre nos podéis dejar vuestra opinión en un comentario. Lo tendremos en cuenta seguro para programas futuros.

Like every other week, I will tell you the activities programme in the school for next week, let’s see if you like it! If you have any suggestions at all about a particular activity that you would like us to arrange, you can always leave a comment! We will consider it for future programmes!

¿Quieres aprender un baile tradicional español? Nuestra profesora Leticia nos enseñará a bailar ’sevillanas’, un tipo de baile flamenco.

Do you want to learn a typically Spanish dance? Our teacher Leticia will show us how to dance ‘Sevillanas’, a style of Flamenco dancing.

Everybody thinks that we, the Spanish people, drink lots of wine, at lunch time, with the dinner, eating tapas and so on… the reality is that we do drink wine, yes, but not so much, I would say that beer is the most common drink, specially if you are out. However we do produce wonderful wine, red (tinto), white (blanco), pink (rosado)… and many times students ask me which wine they can buy as a present for their parents or for themselves.

I like wine, I am not an expert at all but I have learned to appreciate its taste in the last years. So today I want to teach you a bit about the different kinds of Spanish wine, so you have some kind of idea about what to buy and what to try.

A wine to have before lunch time and in the Summer, a wine from the South, el Moscatel, a delicious sweet wine, perfect to have as aperitive with a bit of ham and cheese. The best of all, Pedro Ximenez, if you can not find it, look for Cartojal o Málaga virgen and serve them always cold. The perfect present for your grandmother!!!

A perfect wine to enjoy with your dinner and the most famous, the Rioja. A beautiful red wine from northern Spain. This wine is labeled according to the amount of aging the wine has received, these are the categories:

Hi everyone! 

Yesterday I discovered something very exciting - there are plans to turn the bull ring outside my house into a massive flea market!!!  Great news all round! I can’t say I’ll be sorry to see the bull-ring go and I’ll have Barcelona’s best flea market on my doorstep!!! 

For those of you who also like a good bargain, Barcelona is a great place to be!  The city has a number of really good markets, selling anything from furniture, antiques and craftwork to fruit and vegetables!  The majority are situated outdoors so you can spend a day in the sun whilst you browse.  The atmosphere is also really fun- a whirl of people bustling around in search of that vintage bag or an old record.  Many people also go just for a nice day out with no intention of buying anything…rarely do they go home empty-handed though!

Hoy se celebra el día del padre en España. En otros países se celebra en diferentes fechas, pero en España siempre se celebra el 19 de marzo, día de San José.

Today is Father’s day in Spain.  In other countries you might celebrate this day on a different date, but in Spain it is always on 19th March - the day of Saint José.

España es un país de tradición católica, y eso se nota en cosas como estas. José era el padre de Jesucristo, así que en su honor ahora celebramos el día de todos los padres.

Spain is a Catholic country and you can tell on days like this.  José was Jesus Christ’s father, so in his honour we celebrate fathers on this day.

Realmente no es algo que se note mucho en las calles, suele ser un día para celebrar en casa, en familia. Donde sí que se nota cuando se acerca el día del padre es en las tiendas, no haces más que ver anuncios y propaganda ofreciéndote miles de pequeñas “chorradas” para comprar a nuestros padres.

 The celebrations are not really public affairs - it is more something that is celebrated at home with the family.  But you can certainly tell that father’s Day is near when the shops start selling a whole host of bits and bobs to give to your father.
