This last week we had the choice to see the best tennis players playing in Barcelona. As every year the ‘Conde de Godó’ tournament sees many top 10 players, as Nikolay Davydenko, David Nalbandian and, of course, Rafael Nadal, the winner!

Esta semana pasada tuvimos la oportunidad de ver a los mejores jugadores de tenis in Barcelona. Como cada año, el trofeo “Conde de Godó” trae a muchos jugadores del “top 10″, como Nikolay Davydenko, David Nalbandian o, por supuesto, Rafael Nadal, ¡el campeón!

Rafa Nadal is the number 2 on the ATP list but definitely the number 1 when it comes to clay courts, as it is his 12th consecutive clay court tournament and his 72 consecutive win on clay, a historical record!

Rafa Nadal es el número 2 de la ATP pero sin lugar a dudas el número 1 en tierra batida, ya que es su título número 12 que consigue de forma consecutiva y su victoria número 72, también de forma consecutiva en tierra batida, ¡un record histórico!

This ‘Conde de Godó’ tournament takes place at the ‘Real Club de Tenis Barcelona 1899′, the oldest Tennis club in Barcelona, with more than 100 years of history!

¿Conocéis la Feria de Abril de Sevilla? Esta semana está teniendo lugar la fiesta más popular de la ciudad de Sevilla en todo el año. Más de un millón de personas venidas de todo el mundo disfrutan de esta fiesta grande, donde se canta, baila, bebe y come durante una semana, ¡con sus días y sus noches!

Do you know Seville’s April Fair? This week the most popular ‘fiesta’ in Seville is taking place. More than one million people from everywhere in the world are enjoying this big celebration, where people sing, dance, drink and eat all week long, day and night!

Pero claro, es un poco tarde para llegar a Sevilla para este fin de semana, así que os cuento algo: ¡En Barcelona se celebra desde hace 36 años la Feria de Abril! En Barcelona son miles los andaluces que migraron al norte de España después de la posguerra para buscar trabajo y prosperidad. Sin embargo, como echaban de menos sus fiestas y tradiciones decidieron montar una Feria de Abril y celebrarlo como se hace en Andalucía!

But it is a bit too late for us to reach Seville for this weekend, so I will tell you something: in Barcelona there is an ‘April Fair’ as well that started to be celebrated 36 years ago! There are thousands of Andalusians living in Barcelona that came north after the Spanish Civil War looking for work and prosperity. However, as they were missing their fiestas and traditions they decided to celebrate the April Fair exactly as they do in Andalucia!

Ya que finalmente ha llegado el buen tiempo, iremos a tomar un poco de aire fresco por la ciudad, por ejemplo pasearemos y tomaremos un café por la zona de la Sagrada Familia. También iremos a comer algo juntos en el Parque de la Ciutadella. Para más información, ¡lee el programa!

We will have a coffee with our teacher Merixell in the area surrounding the Sagrada Familia, the most famous monument in Barcelona. Bring a few of euros for a drink!

As Monday was Sant Jordi and thousands of books and roses were sold in Barcelona, I thought it could be a good idea to recommend you to read, in Spanish of course!!!, two very good books that are very popular and read in Spain.

In the first place a beautiful book based in Barcelona, La sombra del viento by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. Based in the Barcelona of 1945, Semper, the owner of a library in the center of the city, takes his son one morning to the “cemetery of the forgotten books” a place where people take old books in order to be preserved from destruction. Daniel, his son, feels attracted to a book called La sombra del viento… Next day many people wants to get this book… I really love this book, once you start reading it, you can not stop because you want to know the end. The way it is written it is so real, that you really feel inside the story and I promise you, the end will surprise you.

Another good book based in Barcelona is La Catedral del Mar by Idelfonso Falcones. (more…)

Good afternoon everyone!

Last weekend I went back home to see my family and catch up on all things English…after 3 years in Spain I sometimes start to forget what my country looks like!  On the plane home, I began imagining all the wonderful English treats I was going to gorge myself with once in my homeland! 

So, you can imagine my complete astonishment when I arrived home to find that my mum had made an enormous Paella for us for dinner!!!  To make me feel ‘at home’…  I have to admit, though, that it was absoultely DELICIOUS!  It appears that mum had got the recipe from a friend of a friend of a friend who’s aunty is Spanish…and well it really was very tasty and totally authentic. ¡Hola!

Como ya comentaba Jordi el otro día, hoy es el día de los enamorados en Cataluña, se regalan libros y rosas sin parar, y también es el día del libro en toda España. Para aquellos que estáis comenzando a aprender español, seguro que sabéis que leer es una de las mejores maneras de aprender un idioma.

Ya sé que a veces la falta de tiempo, o también las ganas, hacen que leamos menos de lo que nos gustaría, ¡pero leer es una aventura que deberíamos practicar todos a menudo! Seguro que a muchos os apetecería saber qué libros leer en español, y no sabéis por donde empezar. Yo voy a intentar recomendaros un par de libros españoles, que aunque para nosotros son clásicos, seguramente vosotros no conoceréis.

El libro español más famoso de literatura tradicional es Don Quijote, de Miguel de Cervantes, que trata de las aventuras de un caballero enloquecido por los libros. Pero este libro quizá es demasiado para aquellos que estáis comenzando a aprender español. (more…)

Next Monday is a special day in Catalonia… and for me! It is Saint George’s day. In Catalonia this is a day with plenty of celebrations.

The tradition says that men have to buy a red rose to his girlfriend or loved one and women buy a book to their couple. In practise, that means that you’ll find all the centric streets full of stands selling books and roses.

The tradition of giving a rose comes from the ‘Legend of Saint George’. This legend says that a dragon captured George’s lover. George, as the good knight that he was, went with his armour to free his mistress! He fighted the dragon and killed it. The legend says that from the dragon’s blood a rosebush of red roses grew.

Don’t miss the oportunity on Monday to surprise your secret lover with a rose!

The tradition of giving a book as a present is more uncertain but what is for sure is that 23rd April is also the international day of books. This date was chosen in honour to 2 of the biggest writters ever, William Shakespeare and the Spanish Miguel de Cervantes, as they both died a 23rd April. (more…)

Lunes/Monday (15:30) Día de Sant Jordi/ St. Jordi’s day

En Cataluña el día de Sant Jordi es una fiesta tradicional en la que los enamorados se intercambian una rosa y un libro (¡rosas para las chicas y libros para los chicos!). Pasearemos por el centro para ver el ambiente en las calles y los puestos de libros que llenan la ciudad.

Saint Jordi’s day in Catalonia is a traditional day in which lovers exchange roses and books (roses for the girls and books for the boys!!). We will take a walk through the centre to experience the atmosphere in the streets and to see the book stalls that fill the city.

Hi everyone!

¡Hola a todos!

Finally summer has arrived in Barcelona and we´ve got the opportunity to go on some trips around the city, visiting beaches and villages. I´d like to tell you about Tossa de Mar, a small town on the Costa Brava.

Finalmente el verano ha llegado a Barcelona y ahora tenemos la oportunidad de hacer algún viajecito cerca de la ciudad, para visitar pueblos o playas. Hoy me gustaría hablaros de Tossa de Mar, un pequeño pueblo en la Costa Brava.

It´s very easy to get there, you just have to get a bus from the station Barcelona Nord and off you go! The journey takes around one hour and there are buses at least every two hours.

Es muy fácil llegar hasta ahí, tan sólo tienes que coger el autocar que sale de la estación de autobuses de Barcelona Nord. El viaje dura alrededor de una hora y hay un autobús al menos cada 2 horas.

Tossa de Mar is a beautiful little town where you can have a swim in the Mediterranean sea, stroll in the small streets or visit the monuments, which are the most important sightseeing events of the whole area.

Tossa de Mar es un pueblecito precioso donde puedes darte un baño en el mar Mediterráneo, pasear por sus pequeñas calles or visitar sus monumentos, que son de los más importantes de toda la zona. (more…)

Hello everyone!

So, the rain has stopped at last and Barcelona is now back to its usual sunny self!  Hurrah!!!  And, well, anyone would think we had not seen sunshine in years judging by the amount of scanatily clad sun-worshipers lining the parks and beaches yesterday!  I have to admit that I was one of them and headed straight to the Parque de la Ciutadella after work.

If you haven’t already been, you should definitely make time to see this park which is like a little oasis of calm in the middle of the city.  Lying under the palm trees and dozing off to the ducks quacking on the lake, you can easily imagine that you are on a little desert island and not in a bustling city the size of Barcelona!
