Ahora que por fin el buen tiempo ya está aquí, quiero iniciar una nueva sección en la que iré comentando las diversas playas de Barcelona. ¡Hoy comenzamos con la Barceloneta!

Now that the good weather is finally with us I want to start a new section where to tell you about the different beaches in Barcelona. Today we start with ‘La Barceloneta’

La Barceloneta no es una playa más de Barcelona, durante mucho tiempo fue “la playa” de Barcelona, ya que no había más. Ahora es difícil de imaginar, pero hasta no hace tanto esta era la única playa de los “barceloneses”.

‘La Barceloneta’ is not another beach in Barcelona, for a long time it was ‘the beach’ of Barcelona, as there were no other. Now it’s hard to believe but not so long ago it was the only beach for the Barcelona citizens.

Por ejemplo, recuerdo cuando yo era pequeño e iba con mis hermanos a la Barceloneta. La ruta es la misma, coges la linea amarilla del metro y te bajas en la Barceloneta. Desde ahí, coge la Avenida de Joan de Borbo, al final de esta calle está la playa.

For example, I remember when I was a kid and used to come with my brothers. The route remains the same, you take the yellow metro line until ‘Barceloneta’. From there you take the ‘Avenidad de Joan de Borbo’, at the end of this avenue you find the beach. (more…)

Esta semana me han sorprendido con la que creo que es una gran noticia: Woody Allen, director de películas internacionalmente conocidas como ‘Match Point’, rodará su próxima película en nuestra ciudad, en Barcelona. Por ahora sólo se ha confirmado que este verano Woody Allen estará aquí rodando, pero la verdad es que parece ser que ya hay bastantes rumores sobre la película.

This week I was surprised to hear some big news: Woody Allen, the director of internationally recognised films such as ‘Match Point’, will shoot his next film in our city - Barcelona!  At the moment, we don’t know much more than the fact that Woody is going to be shooting here but there are already lots of rumours running around about the film.

En Barcelona se han rodado ya cientos de películas, algunas super producciones muy famosas, como por ejemplo ‘El Perfume’, este año pasado. Sin embargo, un director mundialmente conocido como Woody Allen, con ciudades fetiche como Nueva York o Londres, ha elegido Barcelona, ¡lo cual me llena de orgullo por estar viviendo aquí! Desde luego que será un acontecimiento sin duda para la ciudad que la hará brillar internacionalmente, y también una muestra de que Barcelona es ciudad cosmopolita y con una escena cultural muy importante.

Hundreds of films have already been shot in Barcelona, including some really big ones like last year’s ‘El Perfume’.  But when a director as famous as Woody Allen whose favourite hangouts are usually places like New York and London chooses Barcelona, I feel really proud to be living here!  This shooting will bring Barcelona into the international spotlight and will show just what a cosmopolitan and cultural city it is.

No sé si lo sabíais pero el viernes pasado, viernes santo, según la tradición católica no se podía comer carne.

I do not know if you knew but last Friday, Good Friday, according to the Catholic tradition, we could not eat meat.

En muchos restaurantes, en el mercado y en el supermercado, probablemente habéis visto la palabra “bacalao”.

Probably you have seen the word “bacalao” (cod) in many restaurants, in the market and in the supermarket.

El bacalao es un pescado blanco que aquí en España se come de una manera diferente.

Cod is a white fish that here in Spain is eaten in a different way.

El bacalao se seca y se sala durante un periodo de tiempo y se come curado en ensaladas y con diferentes tipos de salsa.

The cod is dried and salted during a period of time and you eat it cured in salads and with different types of sauces.

Como sabéis, yo soy del sur y en Málaga hay un plato típico de la región que se come mucho especialmente en primavera y verano porque es muy refrescante y además no engorda nada de nada : La ensalada malagueña.

As you know, I come from the south and in Málaga there is a tipic plate of the region that it is eaten specially in Spring and Summer because it is very refreshing and has no calories at all : La ensalada Malagueña.

¡Hola a todos! ¿Qué tal después de este largo fin de semana? Seguro que estamos todos un poco más relajados… 

Hi everyone! How are you feeling after the long weekend?  I think we have all come back nice and relaxed…

Hoy os doy algunas sugerencias de lo que se puede hacer por si acaso tenéis algún día libre mientras estáis en Barcelona. No estaré durante mucho tiempo más en Barcelona, así que estoy disfrutando de todos los fines de semana para descubrir algo más de la ciudad y de Cataluña.

Today I am going to give you some ideas about what to do when you have a day off. I haven’t got much time left here in Barcelona so I am making the most of the weekends to discover more of the city and Catalonia.

En una hora de tren, se puede llegar a Girona, una ciudad pequeña en el norte de Cataluña con muchos siglos de historia.

Podéis dar un paseo por el Barri Vell, que es uno de los centros históricos más evocadores de Cataluña, con elementos únicos en Europa: por ejemplo, la Muralla Carolingia, el barrio Judío, uno de los más bien conservados, y la Catedral gótica con su imponente escalinata. Girona tiene también algunos museos muy interesantes, como el de Historia de la Ciudad o el de Historia de los Judíos.

Just an hour away by train you will find Girona, a small and historic city in the north of Catalonia.

Here you can walk through the old town (Barri Vell), one of the most enchanting historical parts of Catalonia, where you can find some really unique sights, such as the Muralla Carolingia city walls, the Jewish quarter (one of the best conserved in the region) and the Gothic Cathedral with its imposing steps.  Girona also has some really interesting museums, like the City History Museum or the Jewish History Museum.

Hola a todos! ¡Espero que tengais un fin de semana estupendo y podais conocer la Semana Santa en España con todas sus costumbres y tradiciones! Supongo que ahora ya estáis esperando que las clases y las actividades empiecen. Pues ahora os cuento las actividades para la semana que viene.

Aprendemos a cocinar un plato típico - el GAZPACHO (una sopa fría de verduras). Conoceremos qué ingredientes lleva y los pasos a seguir para cocinarlo.

We will learn how to cook a typical dish - GAZPACHO (cold vegetable soup). We will look  at all the ingredients and then learn, step-by-step, how to cook it.

So what are you going to do this long weekend???? Kate gave you yesterday advice about the wide range of museums to visit and the cool IMAX in Port Vell. I will inform you about other activities such as: Which movies to go to and where, which exhibitions are interesting to see, new restaurants to go and different bars to enjoy.

Do you prefer independent movies o big American productions?? Would you go for an original version with subtitles???? Go to cinema VERDI in Carrer Verdi, Gracia. It is a very cousy cinema with independent movies. Last weekend I watched a French film : Paris, je táime, a collection of different short love stories in different parts of Paris, very good and different, you will see Paris from a completely point of view. You can also see in Verdi the new film of the handsome Gael García Bernal: La ciencia del sueño, a funny film in English: Stephane goes back to France to accept a job that he thinks will help to develop his huge creativity, however… It is a surrealist film full of fantasy and completely different to everything you have seen by this young actor. Very funny indeed.

Good afternoon all!

Have you noticed anything strange this week? Something that’s just not quite right? Yes, correct. It has rained for 2 days running! It hardly ever rains in Spain, well at least not in Barcelona, so you can be forgiven for feeling upset about the whole thing. But don’t panic! It won’t last. It never does. And in the meantime there are loads of fun things to do in the city without getting the least bit wet!

Continuing the ‘wet’ theme, for example, you could have a day out at Barcelona’s aquarium. It is one of the biggest in Europe and makes a really good day out. I’ve been twice but wouldnt mind going again as they are constantly changing the exhibitions. The entry costs around 15 euros - a bit pricey but well worth it I think!

Then there is the long list of museums that Barcelona has to offer. Some particularly interesting ones are the Picasso Museum, the Catalan History Museum (Museo de Historia de Catalunya), the Chocolate Museum and the Miró Foundation.Make sure that you check the school activity list at the beginning of the week though because we regularly visit museums as part of school excursions!

Normalmente la gente relaciona la Semana Santa en España con las procesiones religiosas pero, ¿y qué hay de los huevos de Pascua? ¡Dejadme que os cuente la versión catalana! 

Normally people connect Easter in Spain with the religious processions in the streets but, what about the Easter eggs? Let me tell you about the Catalan version!

En Barcelona, la tradición dice que los padrinos den como regalo a sus ahijados un huevo de Pascua en Domingo de ramos. Lo que pasa es que en Cataluña hemos decidido hacer este huevo de chocolate un poco más “exótico”, lo llamamos “LA MONA“.

In Barcelona, the tradition says that Godparents have to give an Easter egg to their godson or goddaughter. And in Catalonia we decided to make this chocolate egg a bit more ‘exotic’-we call it ‘LA MONA’! (more…)
