The Barcelona Jazz Orchestra at the Apolo Concert Hall - This Sunday!

Friday, December 28th, 2007

¡Hola!

If you like Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Amstrong, Frank Sinatra, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and any kind of music which has “swing” you might be interested in this information:

On Sunday 30th of December, the “Barcelona Jazz Orchestra”, one of the most prestigious big bands in the city will perform in the very charismatic Apolo Concert Hall. Don’t miss it! It is a great apportunity to hear good Jazz in a perfect place!

For those who have not heard of them, the Barcelona Jazz Orchestra was created in 1996, in the Taller de Músics (the lucky students who went to our “Jazz Si” activity last week already know some of the musicians of this workshop!) and has given over 150 concerts throughout Catalonia and all over Spain during the period up to the year 2000.

No wonder why they have this great capacity of electrifying the atmosphere!!!!

What to do in Barcelona for New Year’s!

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

Hola!

Are you all back from the Christmas hungover? Well, after 2 days of eating non-stop, we now have to concentrate on burning up all those calories around Barcelona discos! Have you decided what you are doing on New Year’s eve? I know, every year it’s such a headache to think of what you want to do, what your friends want to do, and to make those two coincide…

Well, whether you are here in Barcelona or planning to spend it here or elsewhere in Spain, I will definitely recommend you to consider going to a ‘cotillón’. These parties take place all around Spain in discos or bars. They cost around 30-50 euros, and include a fun-pack to spend the whole night in one place, without having to think ‘where do we go now?’. The fun-pack consists of some free drinks (5 or so), snacks, a ‘cotillón’ bag (with confetti, streamers, a mask and other things) and maybe some tickets to take part in a special draw that night. Budget-flights all over the world

Friday, December 21st, 2007

Hello guys!

I’m in an especially good mood today as I have just booked my flights for a holiday to Germany. And to top it off, the total journey costs me 42.50 euros, all taxes included!  That’s really cheap!

I am travelling with Easyjet which used to be one of hundreds of these cheap airlines in Europe. They are offering hundreds of new routes to places (some exotic!) all over the world. Did you know that there are a lot of websites like this one, which compare flight prices for you? This is very helpful to keep track of these flights.  (more…)

And because we don’t want to miss anything, now there is a new bar in Barceloneta beach called “Ice Bar” for all of those who really want to try everything in their own life!

The Raluy Circus has just arrived in Barcelona!

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

If you like going to the circus, this information is for you:

The Raluy Circus will be in the old port from the 16th of December to the 6th of January 2008 and his show is called this year: “La Belle Epoque”.

It might no be the biggest, the most innovative or the best circus that comes to Barcelona but still… its small format will give you an idea of what the circus might have looked like years ago.

His show this year is a tribute to the romantic “Belle Epoque”, a time when the TV, DVD, video games had not yet been invented and the Opera, the ballet and the circus were therefore a very popular entertainment.

Here is the link to the website to check their availabilities and buy your ticket.   (more…)

Spanish Christmas Lottery - El Gordo: Tempt your luck!

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

Hi all,

There’s something happening this week that makes Spanish people go crazy… ‘El Gordo de Navidad’ (literally ‘Christmas Fat Guy’)! On 22nd December, this Saturday, there will be millions of Spaniards watching TV (1st channel) like hypnotised from 8 am because the Christmas Lottery Draw is on! This draw is called ‘El Gordo’ because it is the most money played in Spain in the whole year.

Spanish people play the ‘Gordo’ as an old Christmas tradition more than a game. Everybody gets at least one lottery ticket as the one in the picture (’decimo’) to share with their friends, family or work colleagues. They cost 20 euros each, and these can be divided into ‘participaciones’ (tickets with the same number, playing a certain amount of money on that number). For example, if you buy a ‘decimo’, you can share 20 ‘participaciones’ of 1 euro with your friends, family…etc (more…)

Skiing, snowboarding and snow

Monday, December 17th, 2007

Hello everybody!

How are you? Do you know what I discovered last weekend!?!

If you like skiing, snowboarding or anything to do with snow, just like me, because I’m 100% ‘del norte’, ;-) you are going to adore my latest discovery - I spot cheap weekend trips from Barcelona to the ski slopes (La Molina, Andorra and Baqueira-Beret, for example). I walked past some travel agencies in Barcelona and Badalona when I saw the incredible prices. I was amazed!!! Firstly I thought this had to be a joke… But then after realizing that these were real prices, I booked a 3-day ski-trip for me and my girlfriend from Barcelona to Andorra - 3 nights in a 3* hotel, half board and the coach - for only 450 euros!!! Isn’t it cheap!?!

You must know, if you would like to book a ski-trip from Germany to the Alps it is much more expensive: You actually have to pay between 600 and 800 euros for this trip (2 persons)… :-(   Furthermore, I’m living in Cologne and it is quite exhausting to get to the Alps from there. It would take you approximately 8 hours by car meanwhile here in 2-3 hours you can be already skiing! So, you could imagine how happy I was about this… :-) Although I’m feeling proud of my “new” discovery, all my Spanish friends told me that these are really old news… But for me it was really new!!!  I think the budget-boom for skiing-trips did just arrived 2 or 3 years ago, before I arrived in BCN! ;-)  But now I would like to tell you something about the most popular and cheapest Catalan ski courts around Barcelona. What our students have to say about Camino Barcelona!

Friday, December 14th, 2007

Today we’d like to show you what Alexis Harris had to say about her experience in Camino Barcelona:

‘After taking Spanish in school for years and still not being able to carry on a conversation, I feared I would never be comfortable speaking the language. That is, until my two weeks at Camino Barcelona!

Being in a Spanish speaking environment 24 hours a day with excellent teachers and supportive staff really helped me finally bridge the gap between knowing Spanish and speaking Spanish.

When I first arrived at the school after a very long flight, I was impressed by the friendly staff (even at 8am on a Sunday!) as well as at the amazing location of the school. The school was right in the center of town very close to some of Barcelona’s most famous destinations such as ‘Las Ramblas’ and several examples of Gaudi’s Architecture. (more…)
