Hey everybody!

How are you? Have you all enjoyed Sant Jordi yesterday?

If you do not know what to do next week-end in Barcelona, and if you like Andalucía and its traditions, I would surely recommend you to go to the “Feria de Abril”.

In the early 70s, thousands flocked from Andalucía in search of a better way of life and more working opportunities, bringing with them aspects of their lives which many people instantly recognise as part of traditional Spanish culture. When Spain is mentioned, I’m sure many of you would immediately picture flamenco, extravagant and colourful dresses, and delicious plates of food.

Luckily for you, you will find all of the above in Barcelona from the 26th April until the 5th May at the Parc del Forum, in the Diagonal Mar district.

Hi!

If you live in Barcelona, you must have noticed that there are plenty of stalls in the city with books and roses and you might wonder why. If you want to know more about Sant Jordi, I recommend you to read Yannick’s post as it includes information not only about the tradition but also adresses to go to if you would like to buy a book signed by his/her own author.

If you are in Barcelona, you might also be interested in participating in Sant Jordi’s photograph competition. To do so, you just need to take a really good picture and send it to us by email (and before 0.00) to info@caminobarcelona.com.

For the romantics amongst you, you are in luck! Saint Valentine has already passed months ago, but thankfully Catalonia has an extra Saint of Love, his name is Sant Jordi and he invites you all to come and experience the magic of his special day right here with us in Barcelona!

Who do you say? Let me give you a quick introduction to the legend of Catalonia’s patron saint. Sant Jordi lived around the year 300. It is said that during this age the town of Montblanc (province of Tarragona) was terrorized by a dragon which was killed by the brave Sant Jordi. Out of the blood of the dragon a rose sprouted, which he then handed to his beloved one, the princess. (more…)

Hi everyone,

It’s that time of year again when the bakeries fill their windows with chocolatey goods, market stalls appear in the street full of palms and fluffy yellow chicks (the toy version), and everyone seems to put their diet on yet another hold.

Besides the well known traditions of not eating meat on Good Friday and the copious amounts of chocolate which follow, below are some other, less well known traditions which the team at Camino Barcelona have told me about!

Hola chicos y chicas,

Have you already heard about our trip to “Las fallas” (English: The bonfires). Las Fallas are a huge annual celebration in Valencia which take place from the 15th to the 19th of March.

Since the Valencian people are very keen on their festivity, preparations for it start weeks before the official beginning. From the first of March on each day there is a special firework display in the town hall square and little concerts all around the town.

Today the team at Camino Barcelona would like to present to you all an interesting event that will soon be taking place in Barcelona and that would be of particular interest to any arts and drama fans out there!

From the 19th of May onwards, an English theatre company Jocular Theatre who produce shows in English in Barcelona will be putting on show their latest piece of work: BatBoy the musical! Previous productions of there’s have included; Private eyes, The foreigner, Lend me a Tenor and The little shop of horrors and have all been very successful. Batboy is to be their 11th production and hopefully it will have as much success as its predecessors!!

The musical has been described as a “darkly-funny, pop-rock musical” about the discovery of a member of a small village who is half boy half bat and the story follows his struggle to survive within a world that rejects him. It has been described as an exotic mix between My fair lady and Edward scissor hands and as a classic love story but with a modern day twist. It is promised to be like nothing you have ever seen before!!

So, if you are interested in Theatre and fancy a break from your Spanish studies, or even if English is not your native language but you just fancy brushing up on your  English language skills in a relaxed and fun way, don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to experience some perhaps more alternative culture of the city!

The show will take place in the Centre Moral I Cultural de Poblenou on Saturday and Sunday for two consecutive weekends, 19th and 20th of May and the following 26th and 27th of May starting at 9.30pm on Saturdays and 6.30pm on Sundays. My name is Vahri, I’m the newest work experience recruit at Camino Barcelona! I arrived here about 3 weeks ago and I have loved every minute so far! Barcelona is one of the most welcoming cities I’ve been to; everyone I know who has been here raves on about how lucky I am to spend a year here so I hope there will be lots of good times ahead! I already feel at home here and I’m sure that you will feel the same if you decide to pay a trip to this amazing city! One thing that I LOVE about Barcelona is that you can never get bored! There is always some form of party to go to, a street festival or a cultural event going on. In my three weeks here I’ve already been to two massive street festivals and there are more to come!

Hello everyone!

My name is Cara and I am a new intern here at Camino Barcelona.

I will be spending six months working here as part of my degree in Modern Languages at Newcastle University, in England. As you may have heard before, Newcastle is a lively city, well known for its wild nightlife, but I am originally from a much quieter town (also in the north of England) called York.

As I’m more accustomed to smaller cities, Barcelona has been a big change for me! I particularly wanted to come here for my internship because, after studying a few months of Catalan, I learnt a lot about the vibrant and unique culture of this region. It seems to me that no where else offers such varied and interesting festivals that take place all year round. So whenever you choose to visit there’s always something spectacular to see and I’m really looking forward to getting involved over the next few months.

Hi everybody!

As we are currently preparing our lists of students for our next evening course, we thought it might be a good excuse to speak a little bit more about this course.  And as Victorien (our “official reporter” in the school) has done this course, we thought that the best way to speak about this option of classes would be to let him present it: 

Hey guys! This is Victorien. Last month, I have started the evening course, here at Camino. Unfortunately, Last Thursday was my last day. That is so sad because I have learnt so much. Since this course was highly beneficial, I have decided to give you more details about it:

First, if you study or work in Barcelona, this course is for you! A great majority of our students are Erasmus students or have just arrived in Barcelona and want to improve their Spanish skills.
