Spanish Christmas Lottery - El Gordo: Tempt your luck!

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

Hi all,

There’s something happening this week that makes Spanish people go crazy… ‘El Gordo de Navidad’ (literally ‘Christmas Fat Guy’)! On 22nd December, this Saturday, there will be millions of Spaniards watching TV (1st channel) like hypnotised from 8 am because the Christmas Lottery Draw is on! This draw is called ‘El Gordo’ because it is the most money played in Spain in the whole year.

Spanish people play the ‘Gordo’ as an old Christmas tradition more than a game. Everybody gets at least one lottery ticket as the one in the picture (’decimo’) to share with their friends, family or work colleagues. They cost 20 euros each, and these can be divided into ‘participaciones’ (tickets with the same number, playing a certain amount of money on that number). For example, if you buy a ‘decimo’, you can share 20 ‘participaciones’ of 1 euro with your friends, family…etc (more…)

Christmas gifts in Barcelona!

Friday, December 7th, 2007

Hello everyone,

How are you? Hope you’re doing great!

As the Christmas time already has begun in Barcelona, I would like to tell you something about the traditional Christmas sweets of Spain during this period.

If you don’t know what to buy for your friends and families, read carefully the following. ;-) It could be a good opportunity for a gift!

turron 1

There are two famous sweets in Spain during Christmas time: “el turrón” and “el polvorón”. These popular sweets are especially available on Christmas time and not during any other period.

The “turrón” is a nougat bar, typically made of honey, sugar, and egg white, coated in crushed, toasted almonds. It’s usually shaped into a rectangular tablet or a round cake. It is mostly consumed as a traditional dessert for Christmas. (more…)

Christmas in Barcelona: Shopping and Tradition!

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

Hi!

Do you like Christmas decorations and Christmas shopping in general? This information is for you then!

Tomorrow morning is the opening of the famous “Mercado de Santa Lucía” (Santa Lucia Market) and will run until 23rd December. If you have not visited it yet, do it. It is really worth it! Not only for its very romantic Christmas atmosphere but also to go Christmas shopping and to learn more about the Christmas tradition in Catalunya.

This market, situated at the Plaza de la Catedral, offers a complete assortment of Christmas ornaments, decoration, christmas trees of different type of sizes (some real and fake ones), craftwork (clothes, jewels, lights etc.) and a wide range of figurines, some of them traditional and others mostly surprising!!!: One of them is called the “Caga Tío” and the other one the “Caganer”. You have never heard of them??? Then maybe you should read this before starting your Christmas Catalan Experience!!!
