Work Placements at Camino Barcelona

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Good afternoon everybody!

September is just around the corner and it is still so warm in Barcelona!

Today, Cara, our new intern at Camino Barcelona will give you her first impressions about the city and the school. Enjoy reading it!

Hello everyone!

My name is Cara and I am a new intern here at Camino Barcelona.

I will be spending six months working here as part of my degree in Modern Languages at Newcastle University, in England. As you may have heard before, Newcastle is a lively city, well known for its wild nightlife, but I am originally from a much quieter town (also in the north of England) called York.

As I’m more accustomed to smaller cities, Barcelona has been a big change for me! I particularly wanted to come here for my internship because, after studying a few months of Catalan, I learnt a lot about the vibrant and unique culture of this region. It seems to me that no where else offers such varied and interesting festivals that take place all year round. So whenever you choose to visit there’s always something spectacular to see and I’m really looking forward to getting involved over the next few months.

Sala Montjuïc - open air cinema!

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Hi folks,

Our new work placement Aldaïr from France has really good tips for all movie passionates:

Hi everybody!

My name is Aldaïr, and I’m on my third week of internship here at Camino Barcelona. It is also my first time in Barcelona, and yet I’ll try to discover everything of it until I go back to France.

Last week, I was enjoying the Sonar Festival here in Barcelona, as much as the Off-Sonar, which consists in some concerts all over Barcelona.

At first, people told me that the summer in Barcelona is full of events, and not only shows or concerts, but also some cultural expositions and artistic exhibitions. And, basically, that’s quite right.

Like every year, during the whole month of July, each Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the Sala Montjuïc will project some movies outdoors, in the pits of the Montjuïc Castle, next to the Plaça Espanya metro station.

Preceded every time by short movies and concerts, this year’s presented films are (more…)

Our evening course: The perfect choice for foreign people who live in Barcelona.

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Hi everybody!

As we are currently preparing our lists of students for our next evening course, we thought it might be a good excuse to speak a little bit more about this course.  And as Victorien (our “official reporter” in the school) has done this course, we thought that the best way to speak about this option of classes would be to let him present it:

foto evening course2

Hey guys! This is Victorien. Last month, I have started the evening course, here at Camino. Unfortunately, Last Thursday was my last day. That is so sad because I have learnt so much. Since this course was highly beneficial, I have decided to give you more details about it:

First, if you study or work in Barcelona, this course is for you! A great majority of our students are Erasmus students or have just arrived in Barcelona and want to improve their Spanish skills.

How is Christmas celebrated in the Czech Republic?

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

Hi all,

This is Sandrine. As Christmas is now all around in Barcelona, Simona, our Work Placement student from Czech Republic decided that she would explain to you the way she celebrates Christmas in her home country. As you will see: Fish Soup, Cookies, Christ-child and a Golden Piglet, make a nice Christmas Cocktail! ;-)

christmas tree

Hi!

This is Simona. Since I am leaving  the Camino team  in a few days, I wanted to tell you good bye and  invite you all in Czech Republic for Christmas!

Christmas is the most important day in Czech Republic. On Christmas Eve, people don’t work, stay with their family, cook, visit relatives, watch Christmas fairy tales on TV, and go sledging if there is snow…

Christmas in Barcelona

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

Hey everybody!

How are you? Getting ready for the winter season? As December is now around the corner, you must be already wondering what you will be doing for Christmas time!  Have you already thought of your presents, for example? or where you will spend Christmas, for example?

Again Victorien (our Work Placement guy that I will not have to introduce as it now his third blog!) decided he would give you more information about Christmas in Spain.

Hey guys! This is Victorien again!

Since there are only a few days left before Christmas, I have decided to dedicate this blog to this celebration. As you know, each country has its own traditions. In Spain, Christmas is according to what I have seen here until now not as commercial as in other countries. Lights in the streets are only lit the first week of December until Christmas day. The Christmas tree is quite common but only appears in the second half of December.

Semana Santa en Barcelona

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Hi everyone,

very soon it will be Easter time and Barcelona will change a lot during those four days of “fiesta”! So, what can you do at Easter in Barcelona?

Easter in Barcelona

Don’t miss the Easter processions - we really recommend you go and watch some easter parades! There are two you can see outside churches either in El Raval (Saint Augustí Church, Saint Augustí Square, El Raval) or in the Gothic Quarter (Iglesia de Sant Jaume, Calle Ferran, Barri Gotico) with hundreds of participants and lots of music!
As an alternative, you might go on a trip to Gaudí’s Park Güell or to the Ciutadella Park.

Cheers,

Corinna

Barcelona, and the myth of “San Jordi”

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Hi everyone!

My name is Alex and I’m doing an internship here at Camino! I’m 21 years old and I’m studying French and Spanish at Edinburgh University so working here is a great opportunity to practice and learn more Spanish and live in Barcelona!

San Jordi

As I’m sure you are all aware Barcelona is a fantastic city to be in, no matter how long you’re here for as there is always something to do and see! I love the beautiful architecture of the city and the sunshine which definitely makes a change from rainy England! As you know there is always lots going on in the city but in this blog I’m going to talk about one particular day in April when the city really comes alive!

This day is the festival of San Jordi on April 23rd, a day that combines World Book Day with Barcelona’s equivalent of Valentine’s Day. San Jordi is a patron saint and as legend has it, he slayed the dragon to save the princess in a town just south of Barcelona. From the dragon’s blood grew a rosebush and San Jordi picked the prettiest rose to give to the princess and so it is today that on the day of San Jordi all women, from little schoolgirls to elderly grandmothers are given a rose!

In 1923 this festival was joined with World Book Day because April 23rd also marks the anniversary of the deaths of Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare who both died in 1616. To celebrate this part of the day there is a bookstall the WHOLE length of La Rambla (that’s 1.2km!) and in return for their roses women are supposed to give men a book!

There is so much happening in Barcelona on this day from a 24 hour reading of Don Quijote to jazz bands in the gothic quarter, dances in Plaça Sant Jaume and amazing flower displays everywhere! As it gets dark you will find the floor of La Rambla strewn with rose petals and little red and yellow ribbons with the words ‘San Jordi’ and ‘Diada de la Rosa’. Make sure you join in all the fun when you have finished classes for the day!
