Eurovision 2008

Hola people! Barcelona calling :)

How are you all doing?

Probably many of you have heard that next week, between 20th and 24th of May the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Belgrade, Serbia.

I’m a big fan of this song competition, not so much of the songs, but much of the idea of having a European Festival. It’s funny to see how countries that had conflicts in the past end up voting for each other :D

The Eurovision Song Contest is one of the longest running television shows in the world. It first started on the 24th of May 1956 and was based upon the Italian Festival di San Remo. Nowadays Italy does not participate anymore… and I believe it’s the only European country that doesn’t participate.

Anyway… this song competition has been broadcast in the rest of the world also, so it’s much known in other continents as I’ve heard.

This year is the 53rd Anniversary of Eurovision and for the first time a record number of 43 countries participates. Also this year, there wil be two Semi-Finals, where 10 songs will be chosen from each Semi to go to the Final. And we will have a different selection of the songs to the final. Since every year, it’s the same old story that countries vote for their neighbours and not for the song that really deserves to win, this year a jury will select one song from each Semi to the final. So, 9 songs will be chosen by the votes of the public and the 10th song by the jury. I think this kind of selection is much better, so in the final there will be really good songs that deserve the final place, chosen by the experts of music. The first Semi-final is on 20th May, the second Semi-final is on 22nd May and the Final is on 24th May. Reserve these evening to see some funny songs :) like the one from Ireland, it’s the singing turkey!

Spain has won Eurovision Song Contest only once, in 1968 with the song ‘La La La’, sang by Massiel. This year Spain had a unique selection of the song, where artists could send their songs at the website “My Space” and after a national selection of top songs, the winner was selected. Rodolfo Chikilicuatre will represent Spain with the funniest song ever: ‘Baila El Chiki Chiki’. I believe you have heard the song already, because everywhere you go in Barcelona you can hear it, in case you haven’t, enjoy it here!

So, top up your phone to vote for your favourite song :)

Take care,

Genta
