My multi-cultural weekend!

Hi everybody!

Last weekend was really amazing!

The weather was perfect and I decided to spend the whole day on the beach. I relaxed for a while and then had a walk all around the Barceloneta “barrio” (neighbourhood).  In the past this area was mainly inhabited by fishermen, but now it’s full of nice restaurants, bars and clubs.

On Saturday, I went there with Sylvia, my German housemate, and we were surprised by all the different languages being spoken around us: English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, …and we were speaking German!  Once more, we experienced the multicultural atmosphere of this city!

Then, in the afternoon, we went to the Cathedral Square, in Barceloneta, where we saw some Sardana dancing, a traditional Catalan dance.  Just in front of the Cathedral there were many different groups of people of all ages dancing and there was also an orchestra playing music.  Everybody took part - they put their bags and their stuff on the ground and started dancing in a circle.

The Sardana seems to have lots of complicated steps, but everybody can join in!  It represents the union and the power of Catalan people and there are several dances every week: on wednesdays at 7:00 p.m, on Saturdays on 6:30 p.m. and on Sundays at 9:00 a.m.

I highly recommend that all of you see one of these sessions!

See ya!

Felipe

    Hello Felipe!

I am also on work placement at the moment (in the UK) so it’s really interesting to read all about what you are doing!
Barcelona sounds amazing. And you even heard people speaking Dutch there! I am from Holland myself but haven’t heard a lot of Dutch around here yet ;)

    Have fun!

La Sardana is an amazing dance! It’ll take you a while to get comfortable with it but once you have it…the rhythm is in you!
