SUPERSTITIONS: This Tuesday is TUESDAY the 13th, the bad luck Spanish day!
I do not know if you have realised, but here in Spain, if we had to name a horror movie with a man killing people with a white mask and a chain-saw it would not be called Friday the 13th but Tuesday the 13th… why?
It seems that the Spanish tradition is different, in the Anglo countries like Great Britain or United States, Friday is considered a bad luck day because Jesus died on a Friday, however in Spain, although we are considered a catholic country, it is Tuesday the bad day as it is the day related to the god Mars, the god of war and therefore, the god that represents death.
The number 13 is in any case in many cultures, a bad number; and there are many reasons for this, the most popular are: during the Last Supper the twelve disciples and Jesus made 13 and in the Tarot cards 13 is the number that represents Death.
But there are also many other superstitions, some of them so inside of our culture that although some people will never recognise that they are superstitious, they will never open and umbrella inside a house or walk underneath a ladder, if they can avoid it.
Never walk underneath a ladder or you will never get married this year! The ladder against a wall makes a triangle, the triangle represents the Holy Trinity (God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit) therefore walking through the ladder destroys the triangle.
Do not break a mirror or you will have seven years of bad luck. The mirror reflects your image. In old times, your double image represented your soul, your spirit. When a mirror breaks, your soul and your body separate, therefore your life in in danger.
Bad luck if a black cat crosses the street in front of you from right to left. In the XII century the Church started persecuting black cats, as they were considered a symbol of the devil and the metaphoric representation of witches. They were even burned alive during the night of the 23th of June.
Touch wood! As soon as you hear something that you do not want happening to you. The wood represents the Holy cross where Jesus died, it is something good that will protect you.
There are many, many more superstitions and maybe another day I tell you more. Anyway, I hope you do not believe these things too much, as if you also have to worry about all this, life will really be even moooore complicated.
