The “Aida” at the Gran Teatro del Liceo in Barcelona

Hello everybody!!

If you like opera and in particular the Italian one :-) this is the best opportunity for you!

In fact, in Barcelona at the “Gran Teatre del Liceu” (”Liceu” Theatre) the “Aida”, one of Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpieces, is on stage until the 19th of January 2008!

‘El Liceu’ is one of the most elegant and beautiful Opera houses, in Barcelona and in the world! So just for visiting this emblematic building located in the famous ‘Ramblas’ it is worthy the visit, but if it’s combined with such a fantastic opera play, it’s double worthy!

Aida” is an opera made up of four acts and it was presented for the first time on the 24th of December 1871 at the teatre of Cairo, commissioned by Ismail Bajá, who inaugured this theatre in 1869, the very same year of the opening of the Suez Canal.

Then it was presented in Barcelona in 1876 at the “Teatro Principal” and the year after it finally came to the “Gran Teatro del Liceo”.

The story takes place in the ancient Egypt, in the cities of Menphis and Thebes. The plot deals with the love story between the commander of the Egyptian troops, Radames, and the beatiful Ethiopian slave Aida, the illegitimate daughter of the king Amonasro, whose troops are going to invade Egypt.

Aida hides her true origins and works as a slave for the daughter of the Egyptian king Amneris, who felt in love with Radames too.

And this story, of course, doesn’t end up with the typical “And they lived together happily ever after” but I highly recommend you to go there! The scenographies and the chorus are just amazing! I will go to the theatre on Saturday, but hurry up because tickets are running out very fast!

¡Hasta pronto!
