Visit to the Picasso Museum

Hola a todos!Qué tal?

Finally yesterday I managed to take part in one of our school activities and I had the chance to go to the Picasso Museum…because actually I’ve never been there even if I’m living here in Barcelona since 2005!

And I can tell you that it’s really interesting and it’s a shame I didn’t go there before!

The Picasso Museum is located in Calle Montcada, in the heart of the Borne district, in one of Barcelona’s oldest buildings, the Aguilar Palace.

The museum is maybe not very big, as there also other artist’s works in Malaga (Picasso’s birth place) or in Madrid.

However, maybe not many people know that Picasso at the age of 14 moved with his family from Malaga to Barcelona and it’s here where he started studying at the Academy of Arts and painting.

There is a very popular bar ‘Els Quatre Gats’ (the four cats) where Picasso used to gather with other important artists at the time in Barcelona. The bar is still open and is worthy a visit, as you can find some remains from all these artists inside!

The first part of the permanent collection contains all his earlier paintings, which still had an impressionistic influence, the works that belong to the “Blue period”, to the “Pink period” and,in the last part, all his studies on Velazquez’s “Las Meninas”, plus his collection of ceramics.

Besides, until the end of March 2008, you can enjoy also the temporary exposition entitled “Picasso and his private collection”, made up of all his private paintings, among which, works of Renoir, Matisse, Dalí, Miró, Modigliani… which inspired and influenced him a lot during his life.

I highly recommend you to go there to see the evolution of this artist who changed the course of the contemporary art history!

Hasta luego!

Stef

Hello Stefania! I loved your post, as it brought me back to when I was living/studying in Granada, Spain a little over two years ago. I was able to go to Madrid and Barcelona during my stay, and I was truly impressed by both Museo del Prado and the Picasso Museum. The Picasso artwork that these two museums have to offer are absolutely amazing! My personal favorite actually was Guernica, which happens to be in Madrid, but the museum in Barcelona has such a wide selection of his work that it makes both museums a must-see in Spain!

Hope your New Year has started off great :)
